Using Windows Explorer to View Folders with EML Files

Windows Explorer is able to display a list of EML files stored in a folder on your computer’s hard drive in the form of a table whose columns contain information from the headers of e-mail messages. And it is very convenient! You can sort EML files not only by the name of the file (which is often uninformative) or by the date it was created, but also by the name of the sender or recipient, by the subject of the message, by the date of the message, and so on.

EML files and folders MAILDIR

EML files are used to store messages by many email programs, such as Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail, Opera Mail, Zimbra Desktop, Mozilla Thunderbird (optional) and others. The databases of email messages in these email clients are simply directories on the hard drive. Each such directory corresponds to a folder in the mail program (Inbox, Outbox, etc.) and may contain messages (i.e. .eml files) or subfolders (i.e. other message directories). This way of organizing the database is called MAILDIR.

Sometimes it becomes necessary to view such databases directly, for example, if a folder with important messages suddenly disappeared in Windows Live Mail. And in this article we will show you how to do it easily and quickly using only Windows Explorer.
